How we use AI to run a roofing company: the honest version.
I’m a roofer, not a tech company. But AI does real work at this company every day — just not the kind you see in commercials. Nobody’s handing your roof over to a robot. Here’s what it actually does for us, what it will never do, and why I’m telling you at all.
It keeps the schedule straight
The least glamorous and most important job. Estimates get booked, confirmations go out with the right details, follow-ups don’t fall through the cracks. A one-person operation lives or dies on whether anyone drops a ball — AI makes sure the balls stay in the air. When you book an estimate, the date, the address, and the details are right because a system checked them, not because someone remembered them.
It answers the boring questions fast
“What are your hours?” “Do you come to Sterling Heights?” “How much is a leak diagnostic?” — the same questions, every week. AI helps us get those answers back to people quickly and consistently, in plain language, instead of making you wait until someone’s off a roof. The phone still gets answered by the business. The price book is still the price book. The fast part is just faster now.
It keeps the job organized
Every job gets a photo report. Every estimate gets written up the same way. Notes, dates, what was found, what was fixed — it all lives in one place instead of in somebody’s head or on a crumpled work order. That’s the unsexy part of running a company well, and it’s the part customers actually feel: the details are written down instead of living in somebody’s head — so if you call back in a year, we can look up exactly what we did and when.
It helps us write things down clearly
Roofers aren’t famous for their prose. AI helps turn “fixed the boot, looks good” into an estimate or a follow-up message a homeowner can actually understand. But here’s the line: a person approves everything before it goes to a customer. Nothing customer-facing leaves this company without a human saying “yes, that’s right.”
What it will never do here
It will never climb your roof. It will never diagnose your leak — not from a photo, not from a description, not ever. A roof gets diagnosed by a person standing on it, looking at it, and when the leak’s source is hidden and needs investigation, contact us for a free repair estimate — we’ll review the issue and explain the next step. It will never set a price — prices come from the published price book. And it will never be the reason we tell you something we don’t believe. “We fix roofs, we don’t sell roofs” applies to the machines too.
Why I’m telling you this
Two reasons. First, customers ask — they can tell something’s different about how quickly we respond and how organized the paperwork is, and I’d rather tell you straight than have you wonder. Second, I think small companies should be honest about the tools they use. AI didn’t make us a tech company. It made us a roofing company that doesn’t lose your paperwork. That’s the whole story, and I’m fine with it being a boring one.
Tell us what’s happening with your roof. We’ll review the information and contact you about the next step.
FAQ
Does AI answer the phone at Metro Detroit Roof Repair?
No. When you call (586) 698-7094, you reach the business. AI works behind the scenes — scheduling, organizing job notes and photos, and keeping follow-ups from slipping — so the people doing the roofing can spend their time roofing.
Do you use AI to diagnose roof problems?
No, and we never will. A roof gets diagnosed by a person standing on it, looking at it. AI never decides what’s wrong with your roof — when the source is hidden and needs investigation, contact us for a free repair estimate — we’ll review the issue and explain the next step.
Does AI write your estimates?
A person writes and approves every estimate, and the prices come from our published price book, not from a machine’s judgment. AI helps keep the paperwork straight; it doesn’t set prices or promise work.
